the fiscal cliff. four hours before a last-ditch meeting at the white house. it's still not clear whether a last-minute deal is even possible or whether this is now all about shifting blame. president obama and vice president biden are sitting down with house leaders. the guest list includes harry reid, who this time yesterday said he didn't see any way the fiscal cliff could be avoided. whatever the case, our chief white house correspondent jessica yellin will be watching. what can we really expect to come out of this meeting this afternoon? >> well, alina, we're not sure what really will come out of it. the ideal scenario would be if all sides agree to a scaled-down version of the fiscal cliff agreement that the president and spe speaker boehner had been discussing weeks ago and then senator mcconnell would agree that no republicans would block it in any way if he can promise that. he argues that he can't really make that promise but if e he could then speaker boehner would promise to bring it to a vote on the floor. all sides would shake hands and we'd have a deal before new year's. th

until the fiscal cliff deadline. and on what is a holiday weekend for many, that is not the case for congressional leaders in washington. there was a sense of urgency today as the president met with house and senate leaders along with the treasury secretary and vice president a short while ago at the white house to try and forge a last-minute deal. the president says he is optimistic, but at this hour, the fiscal cliff still looms. we begin our coverage with nbc's white house correspondent, peter alexander who has been watching the developments all day. peter, good evening to you. >> reporter: natalie, good evening to you. after his first meeting with all of the top four congressional lawmakers since before thanksgiving, the president marched into the briefing room here at the white house and he said the time for immediate action is now. he called for a bipartisan agreement and said to congressional leaders, warning them the public's patience has worn out. after an hour-long closed-door meeting with the president, both the democratic and republican congressional leaders left the

. the president's remarks came an hour and a half after he finished a white house talking session on the fiscal cliff with republican leaders john boehner and mitch mcconnell and democratic leaders harry reid and nancy pelosi. returning to capitol hill mitch mcconnell went to the senate floor saying he is optimistic there can be a deal. he believes it can come by sunday afternoon, and at that point he would go back to the president with whatever it is he and reid are agreeing to. he said's optimistic that the next 24 hours are critical. however, tennessee senator bob cochran says even if a deal does get done don't expect too much. >> we're goakd up with a small kick the can down the road bill that creates another fiscal cliff to deal with this fiscal cliff. >> the president did say deja vu all over again. if corker is right, we are going to say some of the same machinations we've seen before. if it doesn't happen, the president wants that up or down vote on his plan. >> remember night, monday night is new year's eve when it all could go bad. >> and happy new year to you. >> thank you, gary. >>>
